Lenovo Launches the Kind City: Interactive Global Collaboration Encourages Empathy and Creates a Future Built on Kindness

The initiative features world-renowned thought leaders, including British-American fashion designer and philanthropist Tan France, 2020 TIME Kid of the Year Gitanjali Rao, and UK robotics scientist Dr. Peter Scott-Morgan

RESEARCH PARK TRIANGLE, N.C.-Friday 29 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, Lenovo™ (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) launches the Kind City project—a vision to change urban environments forever and create future cities built on kindness.

By championing empathy in society, the project strives to encourage stronger, more inclusive communities made possible through smarter technology, and restore kindness in places where citizens feel increasingly disconnected.

Lenovo’s Kind City is the biggest crowdsourced public ‘census’ to imagine and co-author a blueprint for a city of the future built on kindness. It’s mission? To bring a more empathetic future to life through insight from global research, a public invitation to participate, and an interactive podcast featuring city dwellers and some of the world’s brightest minds.

“We believe the Kind City project will be the blueprint for mapping a kinder and better future,” said John Gordon, President of Industry Solutions at Lenovo. “Technology can and will make the future kinder, more inclusive, and more equitable. In cities, this means providing smarter technology for all—across socio-economic or cultural backgrounds—including both devices and solutions.”

Kind Council Formation and Interactive Podcast

Bringing together leading thinkers and global experts in their fields, Lenovo’s Kind City is steered by a panel of world-renowned visionaries who make up the project’s “Kind Council.” This includes British-American fashion designer and philanthropist Tan France, 2020 TIME Kid of the Year and inventor Gitanjali Rao, Brazilian rapper Emicida, UK robotics scientist Dr. Peter Scott-Morgan, German futurologist Oona Strathern, and Japanese author and entrepreneur Ibun Hirahara.

The group has collaborated on a choose-your-own-path podcast to discuss the fundamentals in achieving a Kind City, such as inclusion, trust, sustainability, dreams, and opportunity.

As the backbone of the entire initiative, the innovative podcast also explores powerful conversations and incredible stories with voices less commonly heard in futurism. Listeners can navigate from multigenerational living in the USA, to climate change in China, to tech hubs in Brazilian favelas, to dream research in the UK and a kindness currency in Japan.

The insightful and interactive podcast encourages listeners to become part of the discussion while giving them the opportunity to navigate an audio journey personalised to their interests. More than 20 stories, discussions, and interviews were captured from across the globe, from the United States and Germany to Japan and Brazil.

The podcast features NGO and charity partners from around the world, showcasing their efforts to support city residents. Lenovo will work directly with these organizations over the coming months and identify the most impactful ways to collaborate, from workshops on technology solutions with Lenovo experts, to device donations and financial support.

Major New Research Uncovers the ‘Kindness Gap’

The Kind City project comes on the heels of fresh research conducted by Lenovo that dives deep into the lives of city dwellers and their perspectives on the quality of life in their current cities.

Surveying more than 5,000 city dwellers across five countries (Brazil, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, United States), the study exposes the growing need for society to rethink how we live together in city centers post-pandemic.

Research revealed traditional organizations and government are falling short on prioritizing kindness, leaving it to local neighborhoods and communities to shoulder more than their share of the responsibility.

Ultimately a major ‘Kindness Gap’ exists globally in cities with 97% of all polled believing it is important their communities have kindness/empathy, but only 37% feeling their current city is a kind place to live or work.

While the study finds respondents have a somewhat positive impression of the quality of life where they live, they also draw a clear connection between greater kindness in their cities and many tangible benefits, for example, improved mental and physical health; feelings of inclusivity and pride; greater enjoyment and flexibility, that could unlock even happier lifestyles. A significant opportunity for improvement in the face of these challenges exists, including:

Most respondents (55%) believe the quality of life in their city is either not getting better or staying the same. In cities across the globe, majorities say that there is room for improvement in their general living and working conditions.

City residents have reservations about how much the officials that represent them consider kindness when making decisions for the city. Less than one in five (17%) believe their policymakers strongly consider kindness and empathy when it comes to their city.

Most residents think technology will be a pivotal solution (83%) for promoting and employing kindness in their cities, most notably in Brazil (88%).
What the kindness gap presents is a real opening to the private sector to enable and empower greater kindness and empathy. More than ever, there’s an urgency to work toward a more equitable future—and we can use the power of technology to make this come to fruition.

Get Involved: Become a Kind City Citizen

The initiative is calling upon people from all walks of life, across every major city to voice their vision of what a kinder city should be.

Lenovo invites the general public to share their personal vision of an empathetic and inclusive community by becoming Kind City citizens, which they can do by simply completing the following statement: “The future of the Kind City will…” on Lenovo’s microsite housing the project KindCity.com.

All responses received through November 15 will be curated using AI and transformed into 10 founding principles. These will be shared across the world through a range of exciting installations and experiential initiatives. Lenovo will also reveal details of collaborations with the global NGOs featured in the podcast, with actions shaped by Kind City submissions and research.

Visa Helping Fuel ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ Growth Around the World

SAN FRANCISCO -Thursday 28 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

FIS, Moneris, Global Payments, ANZ, CIBC, HSBC, ScotiaBank and more rolling out Visa Installments Solution to their customers, adding scale, brand trust and convenience to popular financing option

Klarna signs global brand deal with Visa to accelerate expansion and scale in several markets

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As consumer demand for 'Buy Now, Pay Later' (BNPL) solutions continues to grow, Visa (NYSE: V) today announced a growing list of issuers, acquirers and fintechs that are leveraging Visa’s technology — both its network-based Visa Installments Solution and its longstanding fintech solutions — to bring ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ options to their customers.

A recent Visa study found that nearly half of all global consumers (42%) expressed interest in installment financing that is offered on their existing credit card or one they could apply for.1 To help partners meet this demand, Visa Installments Solution is being deployed globally to make issuer-offered BNPL options available in-store and across ecommerce channels. With the network-based solution, financial institutions can add BNPL as a customized feature for credit card holders, on their already approved credit lines. And likewise, acquirers on the network can activate the ability to enable installments for any of their retailers that accept Visa. First launched as a pilot in 2019, the solution has expanded to Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Russia and the U.S.

In North America, Visa is collaborating with Canada’s Moneris, and working with CIBC, Commerce Bank, Desjardins Group (Desjardins), Equinox Payments, i2c, ScotiaBank and Versapay. In Asia Pacific, following the recent launch with HSBC, Visa is rolling out installment programs with ANZ, GHL Systems Malaysia and Quest Payment Systems. And in Russia, Visa has partnered with Home Credit Bank and Russian Standard Bank. Visa is also working with Cybersource, FIS, Global Payments and TSYS, a Global Payments company, in several markets across the globe to enable the Visa Installments Solution.

The global rollout of Visa Installments Solution complements Visa’s existing support of today’s leading BNPL fintechs, including: Afterpay, ChargeAfter, Klarna, Paidy, Sezzle, SplitIt and Zip. Since 2017, Visa’s fintech solutions have helped fintechs grow by: issuing digital credentials or virtual cards, so consumers can seamlessly use installments at checkout; leveraging Visa’s acceptance and reach with sellers; and taking advantage of the security and risk offerings Visa provides. Additionally, this week Visa announced that Klarna has signed a global brand deal with Visa to accelerate its expansion and scale in several markets.

“For years, Visa has been enthusiastically embracing BNPL for the same reason we pioneered revolving credit, debit and prepaid decades ago: because it expands choice and convenience for buyers and sellers alike,” said Mary Kay Bowman, SVP and global head of payment and platform products, Visa. “If shoppers prefer a BNPL fintech solution, we are here and enabling it; if they want an option from their banks, we’re helping offer those too.”

Visa’s recent survey showed that future interest in installment plans is high and outpaces current adoption in all countries tested, underscoring the strong opportunity for BNPL usage looking ahead.2 Research shows that when BNPL options are available at checkout, retailers also benefit from an increase in spend and see more shoppers completing their purchases.

“At HSBC we strive to bring new and innovative solutions to our customers. We are excited to partner with Visa and be the first bank outside North America to launch the Visa Installments Solution, starting in Malaysia; announcing our entrance in the digital Buy Now, Pay Later space,” said Madhu Kejriwal, Group Head, Unsecured Lending & Partnerships, HSBC Wealth & Personal Banking. “This feature facilitates point of sale purchases for HSBC Visa credit card customers when they shop with partner merchants, by allowing them to split payments into monthly instalments at no additional cost and no credit application. We look forward to continuing to innovate with Visa, including delivering on our global BNPL strategy.”

“BNPL solutions have emerged as a must-have capability for both card issuers and merchants across the globe. We are thrilled to partner with Visa and to add Visa Installments to our existing BNPL product offering for our issuers and their cardholders," said Ava Kelly, Global Head of Products of Silicon Valley-based i2c, a global Visa Ready and Fast Track member.

“We’re happy to be working with a trusted brand like Visa on providing a Buy Now, Pay Later option to Canadians,” said Patrick Diab, Chief Product and Partnership Officer, Moneris. “Bringing flexible payment methods like Buy Now, Pay Later to our merchants helps them offer their customers more options when it comes time to pay.”

“We are very pleased to partner with Visa on BNPL,” said Craig O’Neill, CEO of Versapay. “As a payment facilitator, we were able to seamlessly onboard merchants into the Visa program, and as the BNPL market matures, we see this becoming an attractive offering for business to business commerce, an area Versapay intimately knows and serves well.”

Energy Vault Announces Energy Storage Agreement with DG Fuels to Provide 1.6 GWh of Energy Storage Capacity In Support of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Projects

Deployment of the innovative EVx™ platform expected to generate up to $520 million in revenue

LUGANO, Switzerland & WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.-Saturday 30 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

-(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Energy Vault, Inc. (“Energy Vault”), the company developing sustainable, grid-scale energy storage solutions with its proprietary technology, today announced that it has entered into an energy storage system agreement with DG Fuels LLC (“DG Fuels”), an emerging leader in renewable hydrogen and biogenic based, synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (”SAF”) and diesel fuel.

Under the terms of the agreement, Energy Vault agreed to provide 1.6 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy storage to support DG Fuels across multiple projects, with the first project slated for 500 megawatt hours (MWh) in Louisiana. This initial project will be followed by additional projects in British Columbia and Ohio. DG Fuels has developed a carbon conversion fuel production process that is targeting a 93% carbon conversion efficiency, which reduces the amount of feedstock required to produce SAF and lowers cost of production.

DG Fuels will deploy Energy Vault’s gravity storage systems to provide green electricity in conjunction with photovoltaic solar to firm and shape the renewable energy to match the demand load of the green hydrogen production. The renewable power will be used to power HydrogenPro water electrolysis for both hydrogen and oxygen feedstock production.

Energy Vault’s advanced gravity energy storage solutions are based on the proven physics and mechanical engineering fundamentals of pumped hydroelectric energy storage, but replace water with custom-made composite blocks, or “mobile masses”, which do not lose storage capacity over time. The composite blocks can be made from low-cost and locally sourced materials, including the excavated soil at the construction site, but can also utilize waste materials such as mine tailings, coal combustion residuals (coal ash), and fiberglass from decommissioned wind turbine blades.

Additionally, the Energy Vault systems are intended to minimize environmental and supply chain risks, which was a critical factor in the final selection by DG Fuels. The systems are automated with advanced computer control and machine vision software that orchestrate the charging and discharging cycles while meeting a broad set of storage durations starting from 2 hours and continuing to 12 hours, or more.

Energy Vault expects this agreement to provide up to $520 million in revenue across the three projects, the first of which expected to commence in mid-2022.

Robert Piconi, CEO and Co-Founder of Energy Vault, commented, “We are proud to collaborate with DG Fuels and its partners to economically enable 24/7 renewable power, supporting DG Fuels to execute against their plans to efficiently deliver green fuel to the aviation industry. Our energy storage systems are designed to maximize the use of local materials and stimulate local job creation, thus amplifying the sustainability benefits of DG Fuels’ deployment plans. These projects will play a critical role in reducing our reliance on fossil-based fuels while further advancing our country’s decarbonization goals.”

Michael C. Darcy, CEO of DG Fuels said, “We are pleased to be partnering with Rob and the Energy Vault team to deploy their innovative energy storage system which best meets our needs for reliable, cost effective, safe and sustainable energy storage. Energy Vault’s system will play a critical role within our technology and vendor ecosystem to efficiently deliver SAF to the transportation industry.”

About Energy Vault

Energy Vault develops sustainable energy storage solutions that are transforming the world’s approach to utility-scale energy storage for grid resiliency. Our proprietary Energy Management System software and Gravity-based Energy Storage Technology are intended to help utilities, independent power producers and large industrial energy users to significantly reduce their levelized cost of energy while maintaining power reliability. Utilizing eco-friendly materials with the ability to integrate waste materials for beneficial re-use , Energy Vault is accelerating the shift to a circular economy and a fully renewable world. Learn more at www.energyvault.com.

Energy Vault previously announced an agreement for a business combination with Novus Capital Corporation II (NYSE: NXU, NXU.U, NXU WS), which is expected to result in Energy Vault becoming a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in the first quarter of 2022, subject to customary closing conditions.

About DG Fuels

DG Fuels is building a zero-CO2 life cycle emissions synthetic fuel system based on high carbon conversion technology reaching 93% efficiency. The DG Fuels’ technology does not require the development of new engines or an expanded hydrogen transportation and storage infrastructure. DG Fuels’ innovative technology produces a hydrogen via water electrolysis and biomass derived carbon replacement fuel for aircraft, and potentially for locomotives, vessels and trucks as well.

DG Fuels delivers a significant value proposition to end-customers, including meaningful environmental benefits and the ability to materially address sustainability goals. If successful, DG Fuel’s carbon efficient solution will tie together all critical elements to power, fuel, and provide SAF to its customers. Learn more at www.dgfuels.com.

ExaGrid Wins Big at the Network Computing Awards 2021

ExaGrid’s New EX84 Lauded with Bench Tested Product of the Year, Storage Product of the Year, and Return on Investment awards and ExaGrid Recognized as Company of the Year

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.-Thursday 28 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- ExaGrid®, the industry’s only Tiered Backup Storage solution, today announced that the company was honored with four awards at the annual Network Computing Awards ceremony, held in London on October 21, 2021.

ExaGrid was voted the “Company of the Year” award for the second year in a row, and the ExaGrid Tiered Backup Storage solution was selected as the “Bench Tested Product of the Year” by Network Computing Magazine’s judges, following an independent product review published earlier in the year. ExaGrid’s new EX84 appliance also received distinction, winning the “Return on Investment” award and the “Storage Product of the Year” award.

In January 2021, ExaGrid released a new line of Tiered Backup Storage appliances, including its largest appliance to date, the EX84. The largest ExaGrid system, comprised of 32 EX84 appliances, can take in up to a 2.7PB with an ingest rate of up to 488TB/hour, making it the largest system in the industry that offers aggressive data deduplication. In addition to the increased storage capacity, the new EX84 is 33% more rack efficient than the previous EX63000E model. The new appliances can be mixed and matched with any of ExaGrid’s previous appliance models in the same scale-out system, preserving the life of customers’ previous investments and eliminating product obsolescence.

“We are so honored to win the ‘Company of the Year’ award as we were nominated alongside such incredible companies in the industry. We are grateful that the ExaGrid EX84 received so much recognition, as we continue to innovate our Tiered Backup Storage solution with the goal of solving all of the challenges related to backup. In addition, the ‘Return on Investment’ award is especially meaningful as we pride ourselves on our unique scale-out architecture and to end the practice of forklift upgrades and product obsolescence that customers are often faced with,” said Bill Andrews, President and CEO of ExaGrid. “We are so thankful to everyone who voted, and to Network Computing Magazine for continuing to support the industry with these annual awards. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!”

ExaGrid Tiered Backup Storage – Built for Backup

ExaGrid provides Tiered Backup Storage with a front-end disk-cache Landing Zone, the Performance Tier, which writes data directly to disk for the fastest backups, and restores directly from disk for the fastest restores and VM boots. The long-term retention data is tiered to a deduplicated data repository, the Retention Tier, to reduce the amount of retention storage and resulting cost. This two-tiered approach provides the fastest backup and restore performance with lowest cost storage efficiency.

In addition, ExaGrid provides a scale-out architecture where appliances are simply added as data grows. Each appliance includes processor, memory and network ports, so as data grows, all resources required are available to maintain a fixed-length backup window. This scale-out storage approach eliminates expensive forklift upgrades, and allows for mixing appliances of different sizes and models in the same scale-out system, which eliminates product obsolescence while protecting IT investments up front and over time.

About ExaGrid

ExaGrid provides Tiered Backup Storage with a unique disk-cache Landing Zone, long-term retention repository, and scale-out architecture. ExaGrid’s Landing Zone provides for the fastest backups, restores, and instant VM recoveries. The retention repository offers the lowest cost for long-term retention. ExaGrid’s scale-out architecture includes full appliances and ensures a fixed-length backup window as data grows, eliminating expensive forklift upgrades and product obsolescence. ExaGrid offers the only two-tiered backup storage approach with a non-network-facing tier, delayed deletes, and immutable objects to recover from ransomware attacks. LG Electronics: ADVOCATING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH TECH INNOVATION

By Mr. Hongju Jeon, President, LG Electronics Gulf

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES.-Thursday 28 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

As world leaders, industry, academia and the wider public unite at Expo 2020 Dubai to share their ambitions for a brighter future, three principles are at the heart of dialogue: opportunity, mobility and sustainability. Accordingly, Mr. Hongju Jeon, President, LG Electronics Gulf explores trends in the field of sustainability and shares how the company aims to lead environmental best practice – from its operating model, through to every stage of the product lifecycle.

Expo 2020 Dubai seeks to deliver one of the most sustainable events in World Expo history, with sustainability ingrained into every process – from building design and construction, to establishing a lasting legacy for years to come. While the push for greener solutions is by no means a new topic, the sustainability agenda has accelerated in recent years – owing to a wider call for accountability and in many cases, out of sheer necessity. Now more than ever, nations and organizations must use their platforms, experience and reach to amplify the green cause.

At LG Electronics (LG), Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) management forms a key cornerstone of our approach, by which we deliver market leading technology designed with the environment.

Setting Goals to Ensure Accountability

Earlier this year, we made public LG’s commitment to completely transition to renewable energy by 2050. LG manufacturing facilities outside of Korea are already on target to convert 50 percent of their electricity needs to renewable energy over the next four years and we are rolling out green initiatives across our offices worldwide.

This announcement joins our earlier promise to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, through the Zero Carbon 2030 initiative, in which LG pledged to reduce carbon emissions in the production stage to 50 percent of 2017 standards by 2030.

Eco-Friendly Product Design and Packaging

In 2012, LG established guidelines for reducing the weight and volume, reuse and recycling of packaging materials. We have also delved deeper into R&D to make our products themselves more sustainable. Our 2021 LG soundbars use recycled materials such as resin for the outer cases of many of the models, while some even feature jersey fabric made from recycled PET bottles and have been certified as meeting the Global Recycled Standard.

The entire 2021 LG soundbar lineup adopts packaging constituting largely of recycled molded pulp, and greatly reduced quantities of EPS foam and plastic. As a result, the packaging has earned Eco-Product certification from SGS – the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company. Our soundbars have been assessed by SGS to have minimal environmental impact, emitting less air pollutants and providing a high degree of recyclability. Additionally, the packaging is designed in unique “L” shape, enabling more soundbars to fit in a typical delivery truck and lowering CO2 emissions as a result.

Empowering Smarter Living

It is essential to implement policies and practices which also help everyday consumers live more responsibly. Over the years, LG has developed intelligent electronics which not only add greater convenience and enjoyment, but also solve common pain points – such as excessive electricity and water consumption.

For certain LG appliances and electronics, this means deploying the use of AI to evaluate areas for optimization, steam in the place of water, or simply modes for power saving and standby. Furthermore, the LG ThinQ smartphone application gives homeowners deeper insight into the performance of their smart home technologies in real-time, alongside recommendations related to improved performance and energy saving.

Closing the Gap with Responsible Waste Management

At LG, we also ensure compliance with regulations on the collection and disposal of home appliances and electronics around the world, while continuing our efforts to build new infrastructures for waste collection.

In order to achieve a cumulative collection of 4.5 million tons of e-waste by 2030, LG is conducting various activities to collect discarded appliances and electronics, such as increasing the recycling rate of collected products and designing in consideration of the proportionate use of raw materials and their recycling potential.

By 2030, we aim to utilize almost 600,000 tonnes of recycled plastic, in a concerted effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain. The goal forms part of LG’s wider initiative to create a take-back ecosystem for electronic waste and increase the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials in its consumer electronics and home appliance products.

About LG Electronics, Inc.

LG Electronics is a global innovator in technology and consumer electronics with a presence in almost every country and an international workforce of more than 75,000. LG’s four companies – Home Appliance & Air Solution, Home Entertainment, Vehicle component Solutions and Business Solutions – combined for global sales of over USD 56 billion in 2020. LG is a leading manufacturer of consumer and commercial products ranging from TVs, home appliances, air solutions, monitors, service robots, automotive components and its premium LG SIGNATURE and intelligent LG ThinQ brands are familiar names world over. • Stefano Volpetti Appointed President Smoke-Free Products Category & Chief Consumer Officer

• Werner Barth Appointed President Combustibles Category & Global Combustibles Marketing

LAUSANNE, Switzerland-Wednesday 27 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) (NYSE: PM) today announced that the company is establishing a category management structure for its smoke-free and combustible cigarettes businesses to accelerate the delivery of a smoke-free future. Stefano Volpetti, currently PMI’s Chief Consumer Officer, has been appointed President Smoke-Free Products Category & Chief Consumer Officer. Werner Barth, currently PMI’s Senior Vice President Commercial, has been appointed President Combustibles Category & Global Combustibles Marketing.

“We are introducing a category management structure to further unlock and enhance PMI’s growth as the company accelerates toward a smoke-free future, ensuring that we remain focused, delivering on what matters, seamlessly—faster, with better quality, and improved cost,” said Jacek Olczak, PMI’s Chief Executive Officer. “Stefano and Werner are leaders of exceptional caliber, and I have every confidence that they will succeed in their new roles, working closely together to achieve a smoke-free future.”

“Establishing a global end-to-end category view will be fundamental in further driving our smoke-free products’ growth trajectory, fostering consumer centricity, and leveraging the strengths of our markets and regions as we work together to deliver on our smoke-free future ambitions,” said Volpetti.

“The new structure will be paramount in achieving our financial and non-financial targets over the next several years, helping us maintain our competitive position in the cigarette market, which in turn best positions us to significantly accelerate our smoke-free journey,” added Barth.

Both leadership appointments will be effective November 1, 2021. The new category management structure ensures greater end-to-end accountability from development to deployment, with the continued cooperation of relevant functions such as Product, Life Sciences, Operations, and IT. Volpetti and Barth will become the strategic owners of each category and will work with the regions and markets to achieve PMI’s business targets. PMI’s six regional Presidents will continue to report to the CEO.

Since the launch of PMI’s first smoke-free product IQOS in 2014, the company has made significant progress in reinventing its operating model and expanding its organizational capabilities, while continuing to deliver strong business results. PMI’s smoke-free products are available in 70 markets as of September 30, 2021, and generated approximately 29% of the company’s total net revenues in the third quarter. By 2025, PMI aspires to have its smoke-free products available for sale in 100 markets as of year-end and to generate more than half of its total net revenues for the full year.

Executive Bios

Stefano Volpetti is a global leader with proven consumer expertise and a track record of transforming brands in complex business environments. Volpetti joined PMI in 2019 as Chief Consumer Officer, driving consumer centricity through the function to deliver “fit-for-use” solutions for market deployment that cover the entire realm of the IQOS brand building, innovation, services, and omnichannel experience. Before joining PMI, Volpetti worked at Procter & Gamble for 22 years, where he progressed through various roles with increasing responsibility, including as a vice president and brand franchise leader for a global division with presence in more than 100 markets. He was promoted to Managing Director Germany & Austria in June 2011. In April 2015, Barth was appointed Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales.

Philip Morris International: Delivering a Smoke-Free Future

Philip Morris International (PMI) is leading a transformation in the tobacco industry to create a smoke-free future and ultimately replace cigarettes with smoke-free products to the benefit of adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, society, the company, its shareholders, and other stakeholders. PMI is a leading international tobacco company engaged in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes, as well as smoke-free products, associated electronic devices and accessories, and other nicotine-containing products in markets outside the U.S. In addition, versions of PMI’s IQOS Platform 1 device and consumables have received marketing authorizations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) pathway; the FDA has also authorized the marketing of a version of IQOS and its consumables as a Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP), finding that an exposure modification order for these products is appropriate to promote the public health. PMI is building a future on a new category of smoke-free products that, while not risk-free, are a much better choice than continuing to smoke. Through multidisciplinary capabilities in product development, state-of-the-art facilities, and scientific substantiation, PMI aims to ensure that its smoke-free products meet adult consumer preferences and rigorous regulatory requirements. PMI’s smoke-free product portfolio includes heat-not-burn products, nicotine-containing vapor products, and oral nicotine products. As of September 30, 2021, PMI's smoke-free products are available for sale in 70 markets in key cities or nationwide, and PMI estimates that approximately 14.9 million adults around the world have already switched to IQOS and stopped smoking. Forward-Looking and Cautionary Statements

This press release contains projections of future results and other forward-looking statements. Achievement of future results is subject to risks, uncertainties, and inaccurate assumptions. In the event that risks or uncertainties materialize, or underlying assumptions prove inaccurate, actual results could vary materially from those contained in such forward-looking statements. Pursuant to the “safe harbor” provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, PMI is identifying important factors that, individually or in the aggregate, could cause actual results and outcomes to differ materially from those contained in any forward-looking statements made by PMI.

PMI’s business risks include: excise tax increases and discriminatory tax structures; increasing marketing and regulatory restrictions that could reduce our competitiveness, eliminate our ability to communicate with adult consumers, or ban certain of our products in certain markets or countries; health concerns relating to the use of tobacco and other nicotine-containing products and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke; litigation related to tobacco use and intellectual property; intense competition; the effects of global and individual country economic, regulatory, and political developments, natural disasters and conflicts; changes in adult smoker behavior; lost revenues as a result of counterfeiting, contraband, and cross-border purchases; governmental investigations; unfavorable currency exchange rates and currency devaluations, and limitations on the ability to repatriate funds; adverse changes in applicable corporate tax laws; adverse changes in the cost, availability, and quality of tobacco and other agricultural products and raw materials, as well as components and materials for our electronic devices; and the integrity of its information systems and effectiveness of its data privacy policies. PMI’s future profitability may also be adversely affected should it be unsuccessful in its attempts to produce and commercialize reduced-risk products or if regulation or taxation do not differentiate between such products and cigarettes; if it is unable to successfully introduce new products, promote brand equity, enter new markets, or improve its margins through increased prices and productivity gains; if it is unable to expand its brand portfolio internally or through acquisitions and the development of strategic business relationships; or if it is unable to attract and retain the best global talent. Future results are also subject to the lower predictability of our reduced-risk product category's performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created significant societal and economic disruption, and resulted in closures of stores, factories, and offices, and restrictions on manufacturing, distribution, and travel, all of which will adversely impact our business, results of operations, cash flows, and financial position during the continuation of the pandemic. Our business continuity plans and other safeguards may not be effective to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. Currently, significant risks include our diminished ability to convert adult smokers to our reduced-risk products, significant volume declines in our duty-free business and certain other key markets, disruptions or delays in our manufacturing and supply chain, increased currency volatility, and delays in certain cost saving, transformation, and restructuring initiatives. Our business could also be adversely impacted if key personnel or a significant number of employees or business partners become unavailable due to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The significant adverse impact of COVID-19 on the economic or political conditions in markets in which we operate could result in changes to the preferences of our adult consumers and lower demand for our products, particularly for our mid-price or premium-price brands. Continuation of the pandemic could disrupt our access to the credit markets or increase our borrowing costs. Governments may temporarily be unable to focus on the development of science-based regulatory frameworks for the development and commercialization of reduced-risk products or on the enforcement or implementation of regulations that are significant to our business. In addition, messaging about the potential negative impacts of the use of our products on COVID-19 risks may lead to increasingly restrictive regulatory measures on the sale and use of our products, negatively impact demand for our products, the willingness of adult consumers to switch to our reduced-risk products, and our efforts to advocate for the development of science-based regulatory frameworks for the development and commercialization of reduced-risk products.

The impact of these risks also depends on factors beyond our knowledge or control, including the duration and severity of the pandemic, its recurrence in our key markets, actions taken to contain its spread and to mitigate its public health effects, and the ultimate economic consequences thereof.

PMI is further subject to other risks detailed from time to time in its publicly filed documents, including the Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2021. PMI cautions that the foregoing list of important factors is not a complete discussion of all potential risks and uncertainties. PMI does not undertake to update any forward-looking statement that it may make from time to time, except in the normal course of its public disclosure obligations.

CAPRISA et Evotec lancent un nouveau projet pour l'accélération et la mise en place de la nouvelle technologie de prévention contre VIH

-Mardi 26 Octobre 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

Senator John Le Fondré, Top Official from UK’s Jersey Visits Leading UAE Dairy Producer, Rumailah Farm

Jersey Chief Minister visits Fujairah’s Rumailah Farm, the products of which are derived exclusively from world-renowned Jersey cows.

FUJAIRAH, United Arab Emirates-Monday 25 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Rumailah Farm, Fujairah-based dairy producer, received a visit from Senator John Le Fondré, Chief Minister of the UK’s Island of Jersey, who paid an official visit last week to the UAE. Le Fondré was greeted at the farm’s main facility by HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Hamad Al Sharqi and Rumailah Farms General Manager Abdullah Taleb.

“We were delighted and honored to receive Chief Minister Senator Le Fondré at our dairy facility,” Taleb says. “His visit is yet another testament to the considerable influence that Rumailah Farms has had on the local agricultural economy.”

Le Fondré was elected chief minister in 2018 after holding several other political positions in Jersey, where he has backed initiatives aimed at supporting the island’s local dairy industry.

Bringing Jersey’s ‘Milk of Royalty’ to Fujairah

Senator Le Fondré visited Rumailah Farm on Oct. 14, where he received an official welcoming ceremony and an extensive tour of the facility. His visit was prompted by the fact that Rumailah Farm only uses cows imported from Jersey to produce its line of popular dairy products, popular among supermarkets and coffee shops throughout the Emirates.

Affectionately known as the “Milk of Royalty,” Jersey cow milk is famous worldwide for its high fat content, which gives it an exceptionally rich and creamy taste. Rumailah Farm employs cutting-edge technology at its facility to produce its range of premium dairy products. “During the chief minister’s visit, we had the pleasure of discussing the current state of agriculture in the region and the potential for further collaboration between Fujairah and Jersey,” Taleb says.

Chief Minister’s Visit: ‘Proof of Success’

Rumailah Farm currently operates two popular coffee shops on the UAE’s dynamic East Coast (in Fujairah City and Dibba) where patrons can enjoy the brand’s signature milkshakes, ice cream and specialty coffee. Since the two locations opened their doors in 2020, they have continued to attract a large and loyal customer base.

“Chief Minister Le Fondré’s visit is proof of Rumailah Farm's success in establishing itself as a top player in the UAE dairy market,” Taleb says. “With diligent work and dedication, we expect to increase our brand’s visibility across the region – and beyond.”

“We are grateful for all of Dr. Mayer’s efforts over the past three years and believe that Dr. Ramsay is the right leader for this next chapter,” stated Ariana Longley, MPH, chief operating officer at the Patient Safety Movement Foundation. “The leadership, expertise, passion and global connections that Dr. Ramsay and Dr. Durkin bring to the organization position us well to achieve our audacious goals.”

“I am honored to be appointed as CEO,” said Dr. Ramsay. “The last year and a half has put a spotlight on the gaps in our healthcare system. I am excited to work in lockstep with the strong leadership and team at PSMF to forge partnerships that actively promote change, develop and disseminate patient safety education material and create public demand for safe and highly reliable healthcare.”

Prior to being named CEO, Dr. Ramsay was an early member of PSMF set up by Joe Kiani in 2012 and most recently served as chairman of PSMF since 2020. He brings extensive experience serving as chairman emeritus of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He has also held roles in numerous groups, including a current member of the Baylor University Medical Center board of trustees, past president of the International Liver Transplantation Society, committee member of the United Network for Organ Sharing and a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists committee on transplant anesthesia and “Failure to Rescue: Post-operative Respiratory Depression” workgroup of the PSMF. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, went to Brentwood School in the UK and trained in medicine at The Royal London Hospital. Ramsay was recruited by Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in 1976.

Dr. Durkin has been a member of PSMF since 2012 and is transitioning from vice chairman to chairman. Durkin brings 30 years of experience in medical management and leadership to his role with PSMF. He currently maintains positions as the visiting professor and senior advisor on patient safety policy and leadership of the NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centre at the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and as associate non-executive director at NHS Resolution. Passionate about patient safety, he played an integral role in the assembly of the Berwick Advisory Board in 2013 to advise on creating conditions to improve the safety of patients in England. Durkin was commissioned by the secretary of state for health to chair an expert advisory group that led to the establishment of the Healthcare Safety Investigation branch. He also headed the development of the Ministerial Inter-Governmental Summits on Patient Safety held in the UK (2016), Germany (2017), Japan (2018) and Saudi Arabia (2019). Outside of PSMF, he has served as the national director of patient safety for England’s NHS, executive medical director at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and held successive executive medical director positions for England’s strategic health authorities culminating as the medical director of the NHS for the South of England supporting a population of 16 million people. Prior to these roles, he held attending, research and teaching positions in cardiovascular anesthesia and critical care at London, Yale and Bristol universities.

“I am honored to continue to work with the Patient Safety Movement Foundation in this role,” states Durkin. “We have made great progress but are now at a time when we must issue a call to urgent and sustained action for all patients and families as well as political and healthcare leaders, nurses, doctors, pharmacists and therapists of every dimension to continue to educate and empower others to help us reach our goal of zero.”

About the Patient Safety Movement Foundation: Each year, more than 200,000 people die in U.S. hospitals and more than three million globally as a result of unsafe care. Finalist Teams Selected in $10M ANA Avatar XPRIZE Competition

15 Finalist teams from 8 countries compete to create an avatar system that can transport human presence to a remote location instantly.

LOS ANGELES-Sunday 24 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- XPRIZE, the world’s leader in designing and operating incentive competitions to solve humanity’s grand challenges, announced today that 15 teams from 8 countries are advancing to the finals round of the $10M ANA Avatar XPRIZE competition.

Sponsored by All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline, the Avatar XPRIZE is a four-year global competition focused on the development of an avatar system that will deploy a human’s senses, actions, and presence to a remote location in real time, leading to a more connected world. In the future, avatars could help provide critical care and deploy immediate responses in emergency situations, or offer opportunities for exploration and new ways of collaboration, stretching the boundaries of what is possible and maximizing the impact of skill and knowledge sharing. These avatars must demonstrate the ability to execute tasks across a variety of real-world scenarios and convey a sense of presence for both the operator and the recipient in those interactions.

“The possibility of living in a world where individuals can provide aid during a crisis in a different country without ever leaving the comfort of their homes is closer than ever,” said Anousheh Ansari, CEO of XPRIZE. “While it's been difficult this year to predict what the future will bring for the evolving health landscape, these avatar solutions will solve real world problems and can bring people together in more ways than ever before. We’re looking forward to supporting these incredible Finalist teams competing in the ANA Avatar XPRIZE and their technology into the future.”

In September 2021, Semifinalist teams brought their avatar systems to Semifinals Testing in Miami, Fla. to be evaluated by the judging panel. Each team’s avatar had to demonstrate the ability to execute tasks across a variety of real-world scenarios, while conveying a sense of human presence for both the operator and the recipient in those interactions. The judges extensively reviewed the submissions and selected 15 Finalists to advance out of the field of 37 Semifinalist teams.

For the first time, XPRIZE is releasing these Finalists in a ranking of how well each team met the competition's scoring criteria.

The ANA Avatar XPRIZE Finalist teams (listed in order of ranking) are:

Additional details about all Finalist teams can be found here.

“We’re thrilled to announce the Finalist teams moving forward in the ANA Avatar XPRIZE,” said David Locke, executive prize director of the ANA Avatar XPRIZE. "The cutting-edge technology we witnessed at Semifinals Testing has the potential to entirely reimagine the human experience. We’re excited to see how teams further fine-tune their technology systems as we lead up to Finals Testing.”

“We are very excited to have 15 teams safely moving forward to the ANA Avatar XPRIZE Finals, despite current COVID-19 restrictions,” said Junko Yazawa, Senior Vice President of All Nippon Airways. “We are really proud of their achievements so far with their innovative Avatar technology that will most definitely be an important part of our future in travel and human connections. We look forward to witnessing our dreams come true as the teams showcase their Avatars once again for the finals.”

The 15 Finalist teams will equally share a milestone prize purse of $2M and move on to Finals Testing in Fall 2022. The teams will compete to win a share of the $8M finals prize purse, with the grand prize winners receiving $5M, second and third place getting $2M and $1M.

The grand, second and third place prizes will be awarded in Fall 2022 after Finals Testing is completed. Performance tests will be evaluated based on specific tasks that showcase the application of the avatar technologies across several use case scenarios. The winning team will integrate multiple emerging technologies to develop a physical, nonautonomous avatar system which its operator can see, hear and interact within a remote environment in a manner that feels as if they are truly there.

STARS OF SCIENCE CROWNS SEASON 13 WINNER

Tunisia’s Riadh Abdelhedi claimed the title of top Arab innovator on QF’s edutainment show

Doha, Qatar-Saturday 23 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

Riadh Abdelhedi has emerged as the top Arab innovator on Season 13 of Stars of Science, a Qatar Foundation (QF) initiative, winning the votes of the jury and public with his innovation, the Hybrid Power Bank, while overcoming a variety of challenges caused by COVID-19.

The Tunisian innovator was overjoyed when the show’s longtime host, Khaled Al-Jumaily, announced that his invention, the Hybrid Power Bank, had claimed 39.4% of the total votes, securing the top prize of $300,000.

“I want to thank the jury and the audience for giving me their votes and believing in my idea and invention, Hybrid Power Bank, which I hope I will be able to continue to develop and release in regional and global markets. I hope that I can set a good example for how creative and innovative young Arab youth can be when equipped with the adequate resources,” said Abdelhedi.

His winning invention, now branded as HyPow, can charge itself fully in a few minutes as a result of its unique power storage system, which combines lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitor technology. HyPow provides the world with an innovative, efficient way to charge a device while leading a busy life. Riadh’s invention encourages us to adapt to our fast-paced life especially during challenging times like the pandemic.

“Last year, we saw global priorities shift; and this was true even for the technology sector, which continues to play a vital role in combating COVID-19. As a result, in this very special season of Stars of Science, we have observed two broad categories of innovation – projects which are actively fighting COVID-19 and its associated complications, and projects that demonstrate resilience and adaptability and urge continuity,” said Yosouf Al-Salehi, Executive Director, Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP).

“This was true of Riadh Abdelhedi, who finalized the Hybrid Power Bank in record time, and demonstrated how technology can drive positive impact. His invention exemplifies the persistence of innovators in developing technology solutions that can solve real-world challenges, which is exactly what we need in our journey towards a post-pandemic future.” he added.

Mugeb AlHarosh  from Yemen came in second place with his Portable Renal Blood Flowmeter, which uses non-invasive biosensors attached to the skin to analyze critical data that can provide a preliminary diagnosis and help identify possible kidney damage. QIAGEN Launches Novel QIAreach QuantiFERON-TB Tuberculosis Test for High-Burden Regions

HILDEN, Germany & GERMANTOWN, Md-Wednesday 20 October 2021 [ AETOS Wire ]

QIAGEN leverages QuantiFERON®-TB technology to advance global efforts against TB
TB IGRA testing now accessible in high burden, low resource and decentralized settings
Study data also showcased at the Union World Conference show promising results
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- QIAGEN N.V. (NYSE: QGEN; Frankfurt Prime Standard: QIA) today announced the launch and CE marking of QIAreach® QuantiFERON®-TB test for tuberculosis (TB) infection, in order to help achieve global TB elimination targets by increasing access to easy and reliable TB testing, especially in high burden countries, low-resource regions.

A milestone in the fight against a pathogen estimated to be carried by over two billion people worldwide, built on the proven QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus technology, QIAreach® QuantiFERON®-TB is a portable device that enables the ultrasensitive digital detection of TB infection with an end-to-end workflow that is simple and cost efficient, and increases access to reliable Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) testing. QIAGEN will focus on regions that face a high burden of the disease, and where getting access to lab infrastructure and resources for testing are limited.

“With QIAreach QuantiFERON-TB we have taken a great step towards leaving no one behind when facing a deadly disease like tuberculosis that is preventable and curable. With this groundbreaking new way to detect TB infections we can aid to prevent patients, especially those in high burden countries, from developing the active form of TB,” said Thierry Bernard, CEO of QIAGEN. “It combines QIAGEN’s proven QuantiFERON-TB technology with a very portable and field-friendly digital device to deliver extremely reliable results without the need for complex laboratory infrastructure at effective cost.”

A quantum leap from the traditional TB skin test, QuantiFERON-TB uses blood samples to test for interferon-gamma molecules released from T-cells that have come into contact with TB bacteria. QIAreach QuantiFERON-TB runs these tests on the digital eHub and eStick system, a true walkaway solution with random access and no calibration or maintenance. QIAreach QuantiFERON TB testing requires one patient visit and produces an easy-to-read result in 20 minutes after sample incubation, with the ability to record and send results for improved data management, making it ideal for TB screening programs.

QIAGEN will work with commercial distribution partners as well as the Stop TB Partnership’s Global Drug Facility to ensure affordable access across all high burden, low and middle-income countries. In parallel, QIAGEN will continue its close collaboration with a variety of international organizations and public health institutions to help drive scale-up through innovative implementation projects.

“Lack of access to the latest diagnostic tests is just one of the reasons the world is not on track to meet UN Sustainable Development goals to end TB,” said Dr. Lucica Ditiu, Executive Director of the Stop TB partnership. “The COVID-19 pandemic saw nine of the countries with the most TB cases cut diagnosis and treatment of the disease by 16-41 percent, setting us back to 2008 levels. Without rapidly rolling out new tools, the commitments made by heads of states to find and treat 40 million people by the end of 2022 will not be met.”

Clinical evaluations of the test demonstrated an excellent level of agreement as well as high sensitivity when compared with QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus, the most recognized, gold standard IGRA marketed worldwide by QIAGEN. The new QIAreach QuantiFERON-TB test was assessed at the Nagasaki Genbaku Isahaya Hospital, Japan, and the six Zambart project sites (Zambia), and shown to be a novel portable and simple-to-use assay that can be implemented with minimal infrastructure for the diagnosis of TB infection.

Published study results can be found here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2531043721001513

Additional study results from Malaysia on QIAreach QuantiFERON-TB will also be featured in a symposium at the 52nd annual Union World Conference on Lung Health from October 19th-22 2021, held virtually this year.
