Huawei Unveils $430 Million Investment to Boost Digital Africa

SHANGHAI
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The eighth edition of Huawei Connect has opened its doors in Shanghai from September 20 to 22, marking its first event since the global health crisis. This year’s spotlight is on artificial intelligence (AI), reflecting Huawei’s key focus for the African continent. During the Huawei Northern Africa Night event on September 20, Terry HE, President of Huawei Northern Africa (North, West & Central Africa), revealed the company’s renewed strategy to guide Africa towards a "smart and connected future."

This strategy, entitled "Accelerate Intelligence for New Africa", is not just a mere roadmap, but a comprehensive blueprint for Africa's digital and technological future. Given the continent’s young population, with 60% aged 25 or younger, digitalization is emerging as a major catalyst for growth in African nations. Additionally, the continent’s considerable potential in green energy offers an unparalleled competitive advantage in the AI era. Recognizing these strengths, Huawei's new strategy is built around the integration of smart technologies, particularly AI, into vital sectors that shape and influence the daily lives of Africans, including health, education, transportation, finance, agriculture, and mining.

The strategy is structured around three core action areas:

Accelerate intelligence to enhance inclusion, thereby improving people's lives by expanding the coverage and quality of essential services;
Accelerate intelligence to enhance governmental management and bolster the attractiveness of the business and commercial environment;
Accelerate intelligence to heighten operational efficiency and productivity across the economy, particularly in Africa's key industries.
To support this strategy, during the event, Terry HE unveiled a significant investment plan named "Intelligent Future" for the Northern Africa region, encompassing the 28 countries located to the north of the equator within the African continent.

This grand five-year investment initiative, totaling $430 million, is allocated as follows: $200 million to establish the region's first public cloud center, offering over 200 cloud services, and an additional $200 million to support 200 local software partners and empower 1,300 channel partners. In term of talent development, Huawei will invest $30 million to train 10,000 local developers and educate 100,000 digital professionals, creating a skilled workforce to drive intelligent transformation in the region.

The challenges are huge, and the stakes are high. "Every technological evolution is characterized by perseverance, exploration, and investment", stated Terry HE, President of Huawei Northern Africa (North, West & Central Africa). He added, “To expedite intelligent transformation in Northern Africa, Huawei will intensify its investments in technologies, ecosystems, and talent.” He stressed the critical importance of close collaboration among governments, businesses, educational institutions, and communities to realize these ambitions. In conclusion, he called for united action, stating, “Let's join forces to usher in a smarter world in Africa and fulfill the aspirations of its people."

For Huawei, Africa represents a pivotal element of the company's growth ambitions, underscoring its unwavering commitment to the continent's digital transformation.

NETSCOUT Identified Nearly 7.9 Million DDoS Attacks in 1H2023 According to Its Latest DDoS Threat Intelligence Report

WESTFORD, Mass.
Attacks Grew 31% YOY With a Staggering 44,000 Each Day Fueled by World Events

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- NETSCOUT SYSTEMS, INC., (NASDAQ: NTCT) today announced findings from its 1H2023 DDoS Threat Intelligence Report. Cybercriminals launched approximately 7.9 million Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in the first half of 2023, representing a 31% year-over-year increase.

Global events like the Russia-Ukraine war and NATO bids have driven recent DDoS attack growth. Finland was targeted by pro-Russian hacktivists in 2022 during its bid to join NATO. Turkey and Hungary were targeted with DDoS attacks for opposing Finland's bid. In 2023, Sweden experienced a similar onslaught around its NATO bid, culminating with a 500 Gbps DDoS attack in May. Overall, ideologically motivated DDoS attacks have targeted the United States, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden, Russia, and multiple other countries.

During 2H2022, NETSCOUT documented a trend in DDoS attacks against wireless telecommunications providers that incurred a 79% increase globally. That trend continued among APAC wireless providers in 1H2023 with a 294% increase, which correlates to many broadband gaming users shifting their activity to 5G fixed wireless access as providers roll out their networks.

NETSCOUT’s insights into the threat landscape come from its ATLAS sensor network built over decades of working with hundreds of Internet Service Providers globally, gleaning trends from an average of 424 Tbps of internet peering traffic, an increase of 5.7% over 2022. The company has observed nearly 500% growth in HTTP/S application layer attacks since 2019 and 17% growth in DNS reflection/amplification volumes during the first half of 2023.

“While world events and 5G network expansion have driven an increase in DDoS attacks, adversaries continue to evolve their approach to be more dynamic by taking advantage of bespoke infrastructure such as bulletproof hosts or proxy networks to launch attacks,” stated Richard Hummel, senior threat intelligence lead, NETSCOUT. “The lifecycle of DDoS attack vectors reveals the persistence of adversaries to find and weaponize new methods of attack, while DNS water torture and carpet-bombing attacks have become more prevalent.”

Other key findings from the NETSCOUT 1H2023 DDoS Threat Intelligence Report include:

Carpet-Bombing Attacks Rise. A resurgence in carpet-bombing attacks occurred since the beginning of the year, with a 55% increase to more than 724 daily, which NETSCOUT believes is a conservative estimate. These attacks cause significant harm across the global internet, spreading to hundreds and even thousands of hosts simultaneously. This tactic often avoids triggering high bandwidth threshold alerts to begin timely DDoS attack mitigation.

DNS Water-Torture Attacks Become Commonplace. DNS water-torture attacks rose nearly 353% in daily attacks since the beginning of the year. The top five industries targeted include wired telecom, wireless telecom, data processing hosting, electronic shopping and mail-order companies, and insurance agencies and brokerages.

Higher Education and Governments Disproportionately Attacked. Adversaries create their own or use different types of abusable infrastructure as platforms to launch attacks. For example, open proxies were consistently leveraged in HTTP/S application-layer DDoS attacks against targets in the higher education and national government sectors. Meanwhile, DDoS botnets featured frequently in attacks against state and local governments.

DDoS Sources Are Persistent. A relatively small number of nodes are involved in a disproportionate number of DDoS attacks, with an average IP address churn rate of only 10%, as attackers tend to re-use abusable infrastructures. While these nodes are persistent, the impact fluctuates as adversaries rotate through different lists of abusable infrastructure every few days.

The Global Healthy Living Foundation Partners with Darna Center: An Initiative to Improve Gender, Race, and Health Equity for Women in North Western and Eastern Africa

UPPER NYACK, N.Y.
Fundraising Effort Announced for Morocco Earthquake Victims

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Global Healthy Living Foundation (GHLF), an international U.S.-based non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of people with chronic disease through better access to care, education, support, advocacy, and patient-centered research, has announced a new partnership with Darna Center, the Global Center for Gender, Race and Health Equity, a U.S.-based center with a mission to improve gender, race, and, health equity for women in Africa. Darna means our home in Moroccan dialect.

GHLF and Darna Center's partnership pays particular attention to North Western and Eastern Africa where women’s health issues are at the forefront of concern. As emphasized by The World Health Organization (WHO), there is an immediate need to address the unique challenges women in this region face — from sexual and gender-based violence to poor maternal and perinatal services, to a lack of equal access to health services and care.

Darna Center’s mission addresses the unique challenges that impact overall quality of life of African women, especially women living in and affected by poverty. Its aim is to dismantle the gender and racial disparities that severely restrict their equitable access to health services. By working together with communities around the world, Darna Center strives to be a catalyst for change through transformative research and policy, advocacy and education, and community engagement.

“There is a dire need to address the long-lasting effects of systemic inequities on the lives of African women, especially women who are affected by poverty, and migrant women who face the added burden of racism and xenophobia,” said Dr. Maha Marouan, PhD, Founder of Darna Center.

“In Moroccan dialect, ‘Darna’ translates to ‘our home,’ which describes a collective space of belonging where one feels safe, secure, and cared for. We want Darna Center to be that space, one that provides assistance to vulnerable women by addressing their unique challenges, including health, so they can have a sense of home and belonging. Our mission, however, extends beyond health solutions — we are building a home of hope, dignity, and opportunity for women in the region who need it,” Dr. Marouan said.

The announcement of the partnership between GHLF and Darna Center comes at a pivotal time, following the news of the devastating earthquake in Morocco, which has exacerbated health access issues for women in the area. “This earthquake is a tragedy of scale that should concern us all,” said Shilpa Venkatachalam, PhD, MPH, GHLF’s Director, Patient-Centered Research Operations and Ethical Oversight and President of GHLF North Africa.

“The health care infrastructure and the people of Morocco will have to bear a burden that must not be faced alone, especially given that resources and facilities will be under extreme strain. As a global organization, we feel it's our responsibility to step in and help alleviate some of those strains and to support any relief efforts that we can to the best of our ability. We stand with unified efforts to lift a community of people who have been struck by this terrible disaster.”

With this new partnership, GHLF expands its ability to help and connect with patients across the world. GHLF currently serves North and South America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, and Nepal.

Teaming Up to Give Back

GHLF and Darna Center have teamed up with the National Association of Doctors, a local Moroccan physician organization, to raise funds to assist those urgently in need of medical support after the disastrous earthquake. Funds contributed will be given to the National Association of Doctors to provide the essential medical help and supplies to the Moroccan community. “The impact of this earthquake will have long-lasting effects, so your help is never too late,” said Dr. Venkatachalam. Donations are tax deductible in the United States. Contributors outside the U.S. should consult with their tax advisor or local laws.

As part of the Kalignite software suite, KTH is best known as a host terminal handler that drives ATMs, kiosks and POS devices. It is also a robust and future-ready alternative to conventional host systems, suitable for networks of all sizes and complexities.

With the key release of version 3, KTH has evolved into a fully integrated acquiring host. As the demand for resilient and innovative banking grows, today’s financial institutions can now leverage KAL’s solution to deliver a whole ‘host’ of additional capabilities - including end-to-end transaction processing, card scheme gateway support and advanced security. KTH thrives in this context as a fully integrated acquiring host. It has a superior transaction set and an architecture that is engineered to scale as needed. LESSENGERS Begins Volume Production of 800G AOCs and Transceivers – Incorporating “Direct Optical Wiring” Technology – for AI/ML Clusters and Hyperscale Data Center Operations

GLASGOW, Scotland - Wednesday, 27. September 2023

Latest advance in optical component design offers several operational and economic benefits.

(BUSINESS WIRE)--LESSENGERS Inc., a provider of innovative optical components based on its patented “direct optical wiring” (DOW) technology, today announced that its new 800G transceiver product (800G OSFP SR8), will begin volume production in the Q4 2023 and begin shipping to customers. DOW is a polymer-based air-cladded waveguide technology that is particularly useful for optical interconnects in the data center and high-performance computing environments.

DOW connects the active photonic devices such as laser diodes or photodiodes directly to the optical fiber, providing high-density and high-speed optical signal connectivity between switches, servers, and other devices within the data center or HPC clusters. This capability enables several operational efficiencies and economic benefits, such as:

No active alignment – cost-competitive optical coupling
No use of multi-channel lens assembly – near-zero optical crosstalk
No air gap – dramatically lower reflection noise
High degree of freedom in heat sink design – much lower junction temperature
These attributes make the 800G OSFP SR8 and other products for high-speed active optical cables and transceivers high-performance, highly reliable and cost compelling.

“Demand for optical connectivity in AI Clusters is accelerating innovation”, commented Dr. Vladimir Kozlov, CEO and Founder of LightCounting. “New designs of pluggable and co-packaged optical engines rely on high density parallel connectivity, which need new packaging and fiber-coupling methods. Direct optical wiring, developed by LESSENGERS, is a great example of such new approaches.”

“We are proud to announce the volume production of DOW-based 800G AOCs and transceivers,” said Chongcook Kim, CEO at LESSENGERS. “The use of DOW technology enables us to achieve high-performance and low-noise optics by its nature allowing us to streamline the production process flow with complete automation.”

LESSENGERS is participating at next week’s European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) in Glasgow at the SEC – at MR31 and Booth #306.

About LESSENGERS

LESSENGERS is an innovative optical solution provider, powered by its patent DOW technology, which enables cost effective direct optical coupling without the use of lens optics. This provides the most suitable solution for data center applications such as 800G/1.6T optical transceivers, active optical cables (AOCs), on-board, near packaged, or co-packaged optics.

Organon Recognized on Fortune’s 2023 Change the World List for Leadership in Expanding Access to Contraceptive Choice

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Wednesday, 27. September 2023

Her Promise Access Initiative helped prevent 57 million unplanned pregnancies putting the company approximately halfway to its goal of preventing 120 million unplanned pregnancies by 2030

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Organon (NYSE: OGN), a global healthcare company with a focus on women’s health, has been named to Fortune’s 2023 Change the World list for its leadership in helping women and girls around the world take control of their reproductive health. Organon has a portfolio of programs, collaborations, and investments designed to lift women for generations to come through family planning education and contraceptive access. Fortune’s annual list recognizes companies that have had a positive social impact through activities that are part of their core business strategy.

Nearly 50% of pregnancies worldwide are unplanned, leading to health risks and reduced educational and employment opportunities for mother and child – challenges that can span generations.1, 2 Largely caused by a lack of access to contraceptive information and services, this problem is so significant that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has deemed unintended pregnancy a global public health crisis.2

“Organon was founded with a vision to create a better and healthier every day for every woman. Part of that responsibility is to address contraception education and access barriers globally,” said Kevin Ali, CEO of Organon. “While we are incredibly proud to be recognized for the progress we’ve made, our work is far from done. Together with our partners, we aim to prevent 120 million unintended pregnancies by 2030 – a critical step toward realizing our vision of a future in which all 4 billion women and girls worldwide are empowered to be in control of their family planning.”

Organon is increasing access to contraceptive choice globally through cross-sector partnerships that are fueling public health solutions, addressing inequities, and giving women more opportunities to pursue education and economic independence, including:

Establishing Her Plan is Her Power, a $30 million, multi-year global initiative to reduce unplanned pregnancies through global advocacy as well as investments in community-driven solutions in the United States, in low- and middle-income countries, and around the globe.

Advancing the Her Promise Access Initiative, through which Organon works alongside partners to expand contraception availability to the 73 lowest-income countries. The initiative has already helped to prevent 57 million unintended pregnancies to date.

Establishing a new model for advancing progress in women’s health through sustainable financing, which is being used to mobilize capital towards initiatives that might not otherwise receive adequate support. Programs to increase access to sexual and reproductive health education and services are currently running in eight countries in different phases including Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, as well as Thailand, Kenya, and South Africa.

A global grants program, which helps women and girls take control of their reproductive health. The first cohort of grantees includes organizations in 13 countries, including the Dominican Republic, South Korea, Germany, and Thailand.

Fortune's Change the World list is selected and ranked by the editors of Fortune based on the magazine's own reporting and analysis. Nominees are assessed based on the reach, nature, and durability of the company's impact on specific societal problems, degree of innovation, impact on the company, and how integral the initiative is to a company's overall strategy.

Veracode Research Reveals 80% of Applications Developed in EMEA Contain Security Flaws

  • State of Software Security 2023 Report Finds Software Security Lagging in EMEA, with Almost 20% of Applications Containing ‘High Severity’ Flaws
  • EMEA Organisations at Increased Risk from Vulnerabilities in Third-Party and AI-Generated Code

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Veracode, a leading global provider of intelligent software security, today released research indicating applications developed by organisations in Europe, Middle East and Africa tend to contain more security flaws than those created by their U.S. counterparts. Across all regions analysed, EMEA also has the highest percentage of ‘high severity’ flaws, meaning they would cause a critical issue for the business if exploited. High numbers of flaws and vulnerabilities in applications correlate with increased levels of risk, which is particularly notable as software supply chain cyberattacks dominate headlines in 2023.

Researchers found that just over 80 percent of applications developed by EMEA organisations had at least one security flaw detected in their most recent scan over the last 12 months, compared to just under 73 percent of U.S. organisations. In addition, the percentage of applications containing ‘high severity’ flaws was the highest of all regions, at almost 20 percent.

“Our data shows that organisations globally are continuing to deploy a worrying number of applications with a high number of flaws in the CWE Top 25,” said Chris Eng, Chief Research Officer at Veracode. “We did, however, identify interesting regional differences, particularly in terms of third-party or open-source code usage and the ways in which vulnerabilities are introduced across the application lifecycle,” he continued.

Analysis of data collected from more than 27 million scans across 750,000 applications helped to produce Veracode’s latest annual report on the State of Software Security. This new report showcases the EMEA-specific findings from those scans and applications, including results from UK, Germany, France, Italy and across the Middle East and Africa.

Numbers alone don’t convey the consequences of hackers exploiting software vulnerabilities. With organisations across EMEA utilising an ever more complex mix of third-party software to deliver their services, the exploitation of a serious vulnerability can impact thousands of victims at once. Earlier this year, a vulnerability affecting printing software tools PaperCut MF and PaperCut NG was actively abused by threat actors. Up to 70,000 organisations in 200 countries became potential victims, and law enforcement reports found threat actors successfully compromised vulnerable entities in the education sector.

Java and Third-party Code Introduce Significant Security Flaws

The research identified notable regional differences in preferred language usage, with Java revealed to be the preferred language for developers in EMEA. Teams using Java were found to remediate flaws at a slower rate than those using .NET or JavaScript, causing many of these flaws to persist or remain undiscovered for significantly longer. Moreover, as over 95 percent of Java applications are comprised of third-party or open-source code, Java usage is a key factor in the higher percentage of vulnerabilities introduced into applications in the region. This highlights the importance of software composition analysis (SCA), which picks up flaws in open-source code, and the research found a higher proportion of flaws reported by SCA in EMEA than in other regions.

As generative AI continues to gain strong traction in software development, the risk of vulnerabilities from external sources increases. A study, presented at Black Hat in 2022, showed vulnerabilities in 40 percent of code that had been written by large language models trained on vast troves of unrefined data, including millions of public GitHub repositories. It is therefore vital organisations leverage SCA tools to find and fix flaws, empowering developers to take advantage of AI without compromising the security of applications.

Applications Become More Vulnerable Over Time

The research also showed new flaws continue to be introduced into EMEA applications at a far higher rate across the entire application lifecycle than in other regions. While EMEA organisations keep updating applications, there was less of a focus on quality. After a five-year timespan, 50 percent of applications in EMEA continue to introduce new flaws, compared to just over 30 percent for the rest of the world. Overall, the baseline chance that a flaw will be introduced in any given month was 27 percent.

As such, EMEA organisations would benefit from paying more attention to the latter portion of the application lifecycle and scanning applications more regularly. They should also prioritise security training for developers, with the research finding completion of 10 interactive security labs reduces the probability of flaw introduction from 27 percent to about 25 percent in any given month.

“This year’s State of Software Security report shines a light on the importance of security across the entire software lifecycle, as well as the urgent need to address risks posed by third-party and AI-generated code,” Eng added. “Whilst across the board globally we are still seeing a concerning volume of vulnerabilities, these figures are higher in EMEA across almost all measurements. Development teams in this region must take the opportunity to automate software security for regular scanning, and carefully consider their use of AI tools, both to increase security and empower developers.”

The Veracode State of Software Security EMEA 2023 recommends four actions software development teams can take to improve their cybersecurity posture and is available to download on the Veracode website.

The global Veracode State of Software Security 2023 report is available to download.

Oliver Bäte, Allianz CEO, Addresses United Nations Climate Ambition Summit

MUNICH
(BUSINESS WIRE)--Yesterday, leaders from 34 governments along with seven non-government bodies, including Californian governor Gavin Newsom, London mayor Sadiq Khan, the World Bank president, the Chief Executive of insurer Allianz, and the head of the UN’s Green Climate Fund, addressed the summit.

Allianz CEO Oliver Bäte was representing the UN-Convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) and Allianz's commitment as a "first mover and doer" in the global effort to combat the climate crisis.

The transcript of Oliver Bäte’s speech follows.

Dear excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,

Since we last came together to announce the launch of the UN-Convened Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance in 2019 in this building, the world has changed profoundly. We have not talked about that today. The long era of robust economic growth, low inflation, and geopolitical stability is over, and it’s replace by uncertainty, volatility, and war. So, suddenly, fighting climate change has become an ever greater challenge.

But remember, transforming our economy is actually a huge opportunity, as we just heard. The cost of not transforming dwarfs the investments needed for the transformation. Not working on the transformation or slowing it down is foolish and ever more irrational.

To overcome polarization and conflict and to build a united and decarbonized society, we need to reach out to each other and build more collaboration and not less. We will show here today that it is doable.

Policymakers are essential; many are in the room. We need to focus on pragmatic, market-based solutions that reflect scientific and economic realities, rather than imposing dogmatic and rigid policies that undermine confidence in leadership. For example, we welcome positive signals, as of yesterday, for the Principles for Net-Zero Financing & Investment as released by the U.S. Treasury.

Our belief in the power of collaboration, that led us to launch the UN-Convened Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance here in this building, is essential.

Since its formation, as we just heard, we have grown to 86 members, including insurance companies, pension funds, foundations and endowments from all around the world, committed to moving our investment portfolios to net zero by 2050.

Now, the problem is that 2050 is a long way off, and almost all of us in this room today who are responsible will not be in power by then. That is why we are asking our members to publish science-based intermediate targets within one year of joining: To keep the accountability with today's decision-makers in the room. And I am proud that the vast majority of the members have already set credible intermediate targets for 2025 or 2030, and not just 2050.

We must all take a firm stand and lead by example: This is what we at Allianz have been trying to publish our transition plan in a way that is fully transparent with the UN-backed 1.5 degree-aligned credibility criteria:

Our action plan outlines how we will reduce emissions in our investment and underwriting portfolios, as well as in our own operations, and no by 2050 but much earlier. Our primary tool is not selling and buying engaging with customers and partners to work together with them on their own transition plans.
Second, our commitment is to grow the revenues in commercial and other insurance from renewable energies and low-carbon technologies by 2030 by a 150%.
And we want to make sure we expand our investments in renewable energies by investing another EUR20 billion in climate and cleantech solutions in line with the EU’s Sustainability Regulation.
But make no mistake, our journey to net zero will be very challenging, and the transformation is so fundamental that we now must phase out coal. Now. And we need to strongly reduce oil and gas, as defined by the International Energy Agency.

So, we invite all asset owners that have not yet joined to join us, we invite civil society to support us please, and we ask all governments present to work with us. In fact, we need from our political leaders more courage and less fear. We will need more pragmatism, and less regulation and bureaucracy. We need more celebration of successes and progress and less demonization of markets. Because, let’s remember, with all the political power, we need everybody to win this war.

Thank you.

InEight's Newest Innovations Empower Collaboration for Improved Project Success

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Tuesday, 26. September 2023 AETOSWire

Latest software updates seamlessly integrate Design Issue Management and Quality Control into Construction Processes

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- InEight, a global leader in construction capital project management software, has announced new innovations that will help collaboratively resolve design issues early on to avoid re-work, and embed quality control in all construction activities to enable progressive review and turnover of complex, multi-discipline projects.

The new Integrated Quality Management feature will help contractors close the gaps between quality requirements and daily work and mitigate risks that can de-rail successful project delivery. The feature will integrate Inspection Test Plans and checklists with construction work plans, field progress and project documentation, enabling contractors to secure rapid ongoing approval of project turnover requirements while avoiding quality issues or project delays. The feature will provide all stakeholders real-time oversight of project progress, improving accountability, streamlining project handover and supporting greater owner-contractor collaboration.

The upgraded Design Issue Management feature, part of the InEight Model solution, goes beyond clash detection and initiates an RFI, fostering multidisciplinary collaboration to monitor and manage design issues and prevent costly rework, safety issues or delays. The feature will include a user-friendly interface to help collaboratively spot and solve issues before they become costly later in the construction process, enabling adoption of collaborative delivery models such as design-build.

Brad Barth, Chief Product Officer at InEight, said: “As demand for construction continues to outpace delivery capacity, owners, designers, engineers and contractors are looking for ways to do more with less. Quectel IoT Modules Get High Security Scores From Cybersecurity Expert Finite State; Pioneering Cybersecurity Transparency Program Begins

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Tuesday, 26. September 2023
(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Quectel Wireless Solutions, a global IoT solutions provider, announced today that extensive testing by Finite State, a major cybersecurity consultancy, shows that Quectel’s products substantially exceed industry standards and best practices in multiple security measures.

Quectel engaged Finite State, a third-party expert security firm focused on managing software supply chain risk for the enterprise, to rigorously test Quectel’s IoT modules to demonstrate Quectel’s commitment to transparent, verifiable product security.

The first progress report released to Quectel concludes that its modules’ security score, as reflected in Finite State's risk profiling, started strong when testing began earlier this year and got stronger rapidly as Quectel implemented Finite State’s recommendations. The score improved across the modules tested from an average of 62 to 24 with the highest possible score being 10. The report underlines that this is a significant improvement in Quectel’s security posture with both the initial and current scores far exceeding the industry average score of 98.

"Quectel has embraced security and transparency holistically, in a way that we rarely see from other organizations. Their commitment to make SBOMs and VEX reports available to their customers will make the IoT industry more secure and transparent," said Matt Wyckhouse, CEO of Finite State. "They have built upon their existing security testing processes by integrating even deeper testing into their first- and third-party code, and they've responded to findings in their development process faster than others in their industry, resulting in risk metrics that place them in the top 10% of all connected products we've analyzed," Matt Wyckhouse continued.

Finite State focused its initial penetration testing and analysis on the most critical Quectel cellular modules sold in the U.S. The platforms verified by Finite State represent approximately 70 percent of all North American IoT modules shipped within the last 18 months.

“Quectel plans to continue this third-party penetration testing and security verification for all of its most critical modules and to make it an ongoing and life-cycle process. We also encourage and assist our device original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) customers to do their own third-party testing,” said Norbert Muhrer, president and CSO of Quectel. “These results will guide Quectel as we continue to enhance our cybersecurity implementation on our products. We encourage our competitors to follow us on their own in such approach to make the IoT industry the safe and trusted place our customers expect it to be.”

In addition to penetration testing of its key modules, Quectel announced the release of Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) and Vulnerability Exploitability Exchange (VEX) documents for its IoT modules. As an industry-first among IoT module manufacturers, these resources will be made available through the Quectel website. The SBOM and VEX documents will assist customers in this crucial task by providing machine-readable, comprehensive data. The SBOM documents will detail the software components and dependencies within each IoT module, along with licensing and provenance information. The VEX files will provide updated data on the vulnerabilities identified and their status.

Providing SBOM and VEX documents has a cascading effect on the entire IoT ecosystem. As a Module provider, Quectel is integral to the architecture of numerous IoT devices. The transparency and commitment to security will benefit all IoT products built on Quectel’s platforms.

“Our commitment to being both secure and transparent sets us apart,” Muhrer said. “By making this information readily accessible, we aim to empower our customers to make better-informed decisions about security risk assessment and patching prioritization and provide full transparency around our security posture. We are offering a full tool-box of security related measures and consulting to our customers to implement secure devices. Quectel is also collaborating with standards-setting bodies to help develop and then commit to achieving a stringent set of security requirements, including attainment of several key industry and government security certifications,” Mr. Muhrer added.

Separately, Quectel reiterated that its modules maintain the highest standards of data protection and security. “Quectel customers own and control all of the data collected by its modules. Quectel has no access to any of the device data,” said Peter Fowler, senior vice president, North America, Quectel. “Quectel is committed to delivering high-quality, best-in-class, secure IoT modules and go above and beyond industry standard practices by conducting independent third-party cyber security audits.”

Quectel retained Finite State in May 2023 to audit and penetration-test the security of its modules. Its ongoing work includes rigorous security testing, improved software supply chain visibility, and comprehensive software risk management.

Highlights

With a combination of gaming technology, new AI capabilities and metaverse infrastructure, the metaverse is delivering more interesting, exciting and useful experiences, boosted by the creator economy. For instance, sports has taken the lead in investments and ambitious projects, driven by the appetite of current and new fans for exclusive, fun content that enables them to consume their sport in a unique fashion with their community, and allowing rights owners new and innovative ways to monetize their content.
Having completed its transformation, Improbable is now clarifying its brand mission as a venture builder, creating new ventures based upon its own backbone technology. The company has reorganized and now has three primary areas of activities:
